Imagine the grand canyon, except the river running through it isn’t a tiny stream. And on either side of this large river is an area that floods so there’s all this really good farming area and a farming community down there. On each side of the canyon is a different nation, they go to war, each trying to take control of the farming place and more importantly the bridge which is important to each countries trade. The farming community is getting hurt in the process, so they break off and occupy the bridge, basically taking over trade themselves. Each country doesn’t like this, so they send some soldiers there to take it over military style for themselves. The community build fort towers on the bridge to better defend themselves, already expecting this might happen, and with their trade revenues hire some of their own militia. Even then, they know don’t stand much chance and expect to be killed off. However on the day of the assault it rains quite heavily, soldiers getting stuck in mud and stuff, and miraculously they survive. They attribute this miracle to the god Gozreth, and to this day it is the popular religion in the region. Their moral improved, and they later end up fortifying the bridge and building a town on it, the people from the farms moving to the bridge for safety. After the war between both sides end, they announce their independence. Thus Bridgeton is born. Envision a bridge with houses and shops down the middle, but also towers and forts on either side and a castle in the middle. There’s also an upper Bridgeton where more wealthy people live, and a lower Bridgeton where new construction work is at, but its sorta seedy with a thieves guild, poorer housing and strip joints etc at. The sort of thing you don’t usually see far from tourist attractions. Then you can take a water powered elevator down the support shafts to a pa-villa where people travel by boat where they’ve made a dam area under the bridge to control trade going up and down the river which of course helps control the floods for the farms.
